“As everyone knows, the sub-prime crisis and un-regulated derivatives trading in CDOs and CDSs justifiably received all the publicity and blame for the recent financial meltdown. However, there was another culprit, who if not equally responsible, certainly compounded the crisis, and exacerbated the de-leveraging that ensued. I am referring to the yen carry trade. The world wide bubble was first fueled by massive amounts of liquidity, as yen, borrowed for virtually nothing, was invested on a global basis. But when U.S. and foreign equities markets began to decline, traders were forced to liquidate their highly leveraged equity positions to meet margin calls. The large losses incurred by these trades not only added momentum to the de-leveraging across all asset classes, but forced the liquidation of the long dollar-short yen, or "carry trades", and was the beginning of the end for the dollar. “
