Over 3500 Expected to Join Together at the 10th Annual Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks at Mercer County Community College Raising Over $200,000

Increasing Awareness and Raising Funds to Support Research into the Nation’s Fastest-Growing Developmental Disorder

West Windsor, NJ, October 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- What: Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a unique fundraising event which creates a safe and fun day for families who are impacted by autism. The day includes a 1.5-mile walk and Community Resource fair with educational sources, therapists, schools, recreational organizations, and creative child-friendly activities - a true “one-stop-shop” for families affected by autism. As our national partners, Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us will have a tented area serving as home base for Geoffrey the Giraffe. Attendees are welcome to stop by and sign their children up for Geoffrey’s Birthday Club. They can also pick-up the “Ten Toys That Speak To Autism” handout and see this selection of everyday toys that help build skills of children with autism, created in collaboration with Autism Speaks.

Thousands of walkers – including individuals with autism, their families and friends -- will join together to raise much-needed funds for critical scientific research and to increase awareness about autism that now affects 1 in every 150 children at the Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks. All proceeds from the event benefit Autism Speaks, the nation’s leading autism advocacy organization. The 2009 Central New Jersey walk is expected to raise over $200,000 and nationwide raise $24 million.

Toys“R”Us, Inc. and the Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund proudly serve as national sponsors of the Walk Now for Autism Speaks program.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Another child is diagnosed every 20 minutes.
