Bookies Think 60.01% to 65% of Irish Voters Will Vote ‘Yes’ in Lisbon Referendum
European bookmakers William Hill are offering odds on the important Lisbon treaty referendum which takes places in Ireland this Friday, 2nd October. This is the second referendum on the controversial European Union treaty. The first time the Irish electorate rejected the change in legislation and threw the European organisation into chaos. However, this time the bookies odds and the latest opinion polls suggest that it'll be second time lucky for the 'Yes' campaign.
Dublin, Ireland, October 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- William Hill have opened betting on what percentage of the Irish electorate will vote ‘Yes’ on Ireland’s second vote on the Lisbon treaty this Friday.
The bookmakers make 60.01% to 65% their 2/1 favourite. They also offer 9/4 for 55.01% to 60%, 5/2 50.01% to 55%, 11/2 65.01% to 70%, 8/1 70.01% or more, and 9/1 50% or less.
Ireland was the only country in the EU to hold a referendum on the treaty, and in June 2008 the Irish electorate rejected the Lisbon treaty by 53.4% to 46.6%.
Ireland’s first rejection of the EU treaty threw the European project in to chaos, but Europhiles have been uplifted by the recent Irish opinion polls on the second Lisbon vote.
The latest MRBI poll showed (excluding undecided voters) 59% were intending to vote Yes and 41% were going to vote No, while the latest Red C/Sunday Business Post Poll showed 55% of those polled were for the treaty, 27% against and 18% undecided.
Whatever the percentage is - the bookmakers believe the result is almost inevitable, with William Hill offering odds of 1/33 for a ‘Yes’ vote and 10/1 for a ‘No’ vote.
William Hill’s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny said “It looks like it will be second time lucky for the yes campaign, and judging by the opinion polls - it should be a comfortable victory for the Irish Europhiles” He continued “The biggest bet we took was from an Dublin punter who staked €5,000 last month at odds of 1/5 on a Yes vote, and we don’t think he’ll be having any sleepless nights before Friday.”
