New Novel Blends Taxidermy, Alcoholism and Emotional Abuse with Dark Humour
Stuffed is a fast-paced, darkly comic novel about restoring damaged self-esteem from the inside out. Readers will never again think about love, dependency, or taxidermy in quite the same way.
Cochrane, Canada, October 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In her debut novel, Stuffed, veteran writer Sarah Junkin wanted to write about emotional abuse. Although its damaging effects occur on the inside and are therefore almost invisible, emotional or psychological abuse is just as devastating for the victim as physical abuse is. From her volunteer experience working with abused women, Junkin knew firsthand about this hidden nightmare.
What makes Stuffed (Infinity Publishing, 2009) different from other stories of domestic abuse is Junkin’s keen sense of the absurd, and her surprising use of humour to offset harrowing scenes of psychological abuse. Readers meet Hadley, who is married to Bud, a volatile artistic genius whose medium happens to be taxidermy. Hadley is so desperate for understanding and human connection that she joins Alcoholics Anonymous, even though she’s never been much of a drinker. This rash act sets Hadley up for a hilarious series of misadventures as she struggles to maintain an increasingly tangled web of lies while her life with Bud spirals to a crisis.
The novel’s title, Stuffed, is a reference to the mistaken belief by many people that taxidermists stuff dead animals. “Actually, my research taught me that taxidermy is a very complicated art form,” says Junkin. “But you have to admit, it’s a pretty bizarre way to make a living!”
The author very effectively uses taxidermy as a metaphor for renewal and restoration.
“Taxidermy is all about restoring damaged— well, dead, actually—creatures by exposing and then re-building their damaged cores,” said Junkin. “I’ve always enjoyed exploring serious themes through the lens of humour, and I was confident I could create hilarious scenes if I populated Hadley’s world with taxidermists and their work.”
