Global Energy Foundation Announces Call for Nomination for the 2010 Global Energy International Prize

Moscow, Russia, October 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The nomination period for the 2010 Global Energy International Prize was opened on the 6th of October 2009. The Global Energy International Prize is an independent international prize established to recognize outstanding scientific research and development projects in the area of electric power industry, which promote the rise of efficiency and environmental security of energy sources on earth in the interests of humanity.

The prize was established in Russia by the Global Energy Foundation with support granted by leading energy companies JSC “Gazprom”, OJSC “Surgutneftegas” and JSC FGC UES. 20 scientists from 8 countries – Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, Japan , Russia and USA – have become the Prize Laureates since 2003. Annual bonus fund in the amount of 30 million rubles is divided equally between the laureates.

When handing over the prizes to the winners of the 2009 Award, the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev said that their outstanding scientific achievements would shape the future of electric power industry in the coming decades. "Say the least of it, the energy future of our planet is in hands of scientists. Russia will continue supporting such research, investing money in such works and helping different scientific schools. The Global Energy International Prize serves for this purpose", underlined the President of Russia.

The names of the 2010 Prize Laureates will be announced in April. The Prize International Award Committee includes 30 reputable scientists and experts in the area of electric power industry. The Award Ceremony is planned to be carried out in June coinciding with the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg.

178 persons from 20 countries were nominated for the Prize within 7 years. The number of countries which nominate their candidates has increased from 7 to 45. 1700 scientists and experts in the area of energy participated in the 2009 nomination. Among them are the winners of Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry, winners of Kyoto Prize, Max Planck Prize, Wolf Prize and Global Energy International Prize of previous years. Topics of competitive works have expanded significantly to include nuclear fusion, renewable solar energy, extraction, processing and transportation of energy resources.

Chairman of the Global Energy Board of Trustees, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences E. Velikhov says: "Global Energy International Prize not only stimulates the development of energy industry as a science, but also demonstrates the importance of international energy collaboration and state and private investments in the sphere of energy supply, energy conservation and energy safety on the planet. It is necessary to create the conditions in which scientific and technological achievements will not only be used to make short-term profits, but also will serve the long-term interests of humanity development, enhance the social safety and improve living standards of people in all countries".
