San Diego Derby Dolls Whip It Good

Representing America’s Finest City, the San Diego Derby Dolls officially applaud Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It” for bringing modern-day roller derby into the limelight.

San Diego, CA, October 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Derby Dolls provided the actors with three months of on and off-skates training to ensure the actresses could skate up a storm when performing their own full-contact stunts on wheels. "I trained for three months... I just worked hard, ate well and went to bed early," said Ellen Page, who starred in the film.

Once you know the Derby Dolls, you love them. “How cool, capable and amazing they are,” gushed Drew Barrymore. “They all have their own individual style, yet they are a team and have this great camaraderie. There is no one not accepted in this arena.”

True to Drew’s tone, the sport of roller derby invites women of all shapes and sizes to lace up and take to the track. Skater-owned and operated since 2004, the Derby Dolls host classes for all levels from novice (never-on-skates) to advanced. Defensive moves such as “blocking” and offensive moves such as the infamous “whip” – where momentum is transferred from one player to another , accelerating skaters at speeds up to 30 to 40 miles per hour on a banked track – are learned.

Bonnie D. Stroir, San Diego Derby Dolls founder, can be seen below causing a stir on the red carpet for the film’s debut. “Everything is better on skates,” she exclaims.

About the S.D. Derby Dolls:
Founded in 2004, the San Diego Derby Dolls are the only, all-female roller derby league across the nation to skate competitively on both flat and banked track surfaces. Within the league, four teams battle for dominance across the state and nation: The Swarm, The Wildfires, Diego Rollers and Hard Corps. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful–do not be fooled by appearances–the San Diego Derby Dolls are athletes that skate only pure, unscripted, full-contact roller derby.
