To be an Organist with Parkinson's Disease, a New Book "A Sniper in My Head" Published by French Composer and Organist Jean-Paul Verpeaux at Lulu.com
Jean-Paul Verpeaux, Webmaster of Organ works and MUSICALIS tells how the scourge of Parkinson’s Disease – the stealthy “sniper” that it is -- gradually took root in his brain and how, it changed every facet of his life. His book tells of the frustrating process to obtain a definitive diagnosis, as well as the fears and hopes he encountered on his journey. Faith, love and creativity have proven the best defense against the ravages of his “unwanted guest.” http://www.lulu.com/content/7716063.
Bourges, France, October 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- This English translation of Jean-Paul Verpeaux’s powerful account about coming to grips with Parkinson’s Disease was the outcome of seemingly unrelated events that happened on two different continents.
In Kitchener, Canada, the day before a major recital in May 2009, Pauline Finch-Durichen's organ teacher Marlin Nagtegaal seriously injured his right hand in a freak accident. Instead of cancelling the concert, he spent most of the next 24 hours learning an entirely new program – for left hand and pedals. The performance was both astonishing and eloquent; an affirmation that even accidental misfortune cannot overcome a higher musical calling.
In Bourges, France, 2009 brought the inescapable confirmation of Parkinson’s Disease into the life of an organist and composer : Jean-Paul Verpeaux (founder of MUSICALIS & ORGAN-WORKS). In May, Jean-Paul learned that Pauline Finch-Durichen had studied French long ago in university and asked if she could translate a “simple little story” he had written to inspire fellow Parkinsonians.
Still in shock at what had happened to her organ teacher, she suddenly realized that this opportunity could be a gift… Pauline Finch-Durichen asked Jean-Paul if he would write some new organ music for the left hand and pedals, instead of paying for the translation. The result was a suite of three magnificent pieces (clients can find them all on YouTube by searching OrganComposer), which she was thrilled to give Marlin only a few short weeks later.
This translation took somewhat longer, but Pauline offers it as a modest tribute to both Jean-Paul and Marlin, two people whose talent, dedication and imagination have profoundly changed her life… and numerous others.
