Rotomotion SR20 Only Unmanned Aerial System to Complete Multiple High Wind Flights During Defense Systems & Equipment International 2009

Rotomotion, a manufacturer of VTOL UAV / UAS for the civil, private and military markets, conducted demonstrations at the recent DESI2009 conference. The Rotomotion SR20 was the only UAV to conduct flight operations, mainly due to heavy winds.

Charleston, SC, October 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Rotomotion’s Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) was the only UAS to conduct operations at the Defense Systems & Equipment International (DSEi) conference, successfully completing all ten flights using its SR20 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The DSEi conference is the world’s largest integrated defense and security exhibition held in London, UK, with over 26,000 attendees, including Prince Michael and officials with the UK Ministry of Defense.

In spite of strong winds during the event, ASM Europe LTD conducted multiple flights daily during the four-day event. Attendees either watched live from the pier or viewed the streaming MPEG4 video feed from the SR20 UAV projected onto the large event screens located inside the venue. The images relayed by the UAV in real-time were extremely clear and steady. The reliability and stability of the SR20 UAV to take-off, fly various patterns and land without any human intervention is due to Rotomotion’s sophisticated, patent-pending Autonomous Flight Control System (AFCS). The video footage will soon be available on ASM Europe’s website (www.asmeurope.eu)

The SR20 is the industry’s most affordable short endurance electric engine UAV, powered by Lithium Polymer batteries and housing one to two cameras in a pan and tilt mount. The system can track objects of interest even when the helicopter nose is pointing away from the object. While capable of fully autonomous flight, Rotomotion’s UAVs support in-flight switching between manual and autonomous modes, provided by a 2.4 MHz safety controller. The SR20 is Rotomotion’s smallest of four model sizes available; it weighs in at just under 7 kg and measures 1540 mm x 355 mm x 570 mm. All Rotomotion UAVs use the same control system, incorporating an AFCS, a GPS and a ground control system (GCS), with larger, gas powered, UAVs available for longer flight times and heavier payloads.

“Codenamed Operation Vision, the demonstration provided DESi attendees intimate, in-depth understanding of the financially beneficial alternative to traditional helicopters for a variety of circumstances. Our UAV maintained stability despite flying with 20 knot winds on certain days,” stated Pietro Amati, general manager of ASM Europe. “The audience watching from the Royal Dock’s pier was also impressed by the electric SR20’s almost silent operation, well below the level of the noise generated by the boats along the London Docklands.”
