Lexile Measures Enhance Popular Georgia English/Language Arts Program
Atlanta, GA, October 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Walch Education, a leading developer and publisher of secondary educational materials, has announced that its Georgia Academic Support Program for English/Language Arts, High School, now incorporates The Lexile® Framework for Reading. The measurements indicate the appropriateness of the material for reader ability.
The Lexile measure was developed by MetaMetrics®, Inc., an educational measurement company. Recognized as the most widely adopted reading measure, Lexile measures have been applied to more than 100,000 books, 80 million articles, and 60,000 Web sites. The Georgia Department of Education employs Lexile measures on assessments.
"Georgia students receive a Lexile score along with their regular scale score for the CRCT Reading or GHSGT English/Language Arts tests,” notes Walch's Director of Education, Susan Graham. “By providing Lexile measures for passages within the Georgia Academic Support Program for English/Language Arts, High School, this title truly supports Georgia educators. While the program was developed for grades 9-12, the reading passages appeal to a wide range of student abilities. With over 92 reading passages in the book, we wanted to ensure that teachers have a selection which offers struggling readers a certain amount of comfort and yet provides a challenge."
The average Lexile measure, 887L, places the majority of the program passages squarely within a 9th-grade reading ability. 74 of the passages measure between 700L and 1190L, or a range from 7th-10th grades. The highest measure, for one passage, was 1340L, equal to a 12th-grade or higher reading ability.
"This demonstrates that the Georgia Academic Support Program for English/Language Arts, High School, is appropriate for a range of abilities,” says Graham. “We're very happy to see more solid evidence of the comprehensive strength of the program."
The Georgia Academic Support Program for English/Language Arts, High School, is a complete, teacher toolkit appropriate for use throughout the year. It contains more than 50 reproducible lesson plans divided into four major units: Reading - Comprehension and Interpretation; Reading - Making Connections and Evaluations; Writing; Conventions. In 2009, the program was cited as a "Recommended Learning Resource" by the Georgia Department of Education.
