OpenBD Revs Install Process to Compete for Web Market Share
Walla Walla, WA, October 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The open-source CFML processing engine Open BlueDragon (OpenBD) recently announced the availability of simple, graphical installers for both Windows and Linux systems in order to help it compete with other web development languages such as PHP, Ruby, and ASP.NET.
The CFML language (ColdFusion Markup Language) was designed from its infancy to make complicated development tasks simple. Since the language is tag-based, web developers who are already familiar with other tag-based languages like HTML and XML are generally comfortable learning and working with CFML. The original CFML processing engine, ColdFusion Server, is now owned by Adobe, who continue to improve and promote the language and offer tight integration of ColdFusion into other Adobe products such as Dreamweaver, Flex, and Flash.
Over the years, CFML has built up a very dedicated following. The ability to “write less code” and “build, deploy, faster”, which are taglines from Adobe marketing, seems to have resonated well with some developers. However, since historically developers have had to pay for a processing engine for their CFML code, adoption of the language has not been as good as PHP or other languages that have free processing engines. This is what the open-source advocates over at Open BlueDragon are hoping to correct.
Open BlueDragon Steering Committee member Jordan Michaels, who developed the installers for the OpenBD project, had this to say; “The whole idea of CFML was to make development simple, but up until now development with open-source CFML engines has required developers to know and understand how to configure J2EE servers, web servers, and the like. The necessity of that kind of technical know-how is in direct contrast to what CFML actually does, which is make difficult development tasks easy. Previously, you've had to go through a very technical setup process in order to 'make things easy' using CFML, and that just doesn't fit with what we're trying to accomplish here.”
“With the creation of the OpenBD Installers, all developers have to do in order to get up and running is click 'Next' a few times, and in minutes they're up and running with a free, open-source, and production-ready CFML processing engine. Developers still have the power and the freedom to customize their server environment, but a complicated installation process is no longer required. Never before has CFML been so freely available to the public, and I'm truly honored to be a part of that.”
The installers were funded by Vivio Technologies, a CFML hosting company based in Washington State, USA, and used installer creation software donated to the OpenBD project by BitRock – makers of cross-platform installation software.
