His work as an expert or fact witness includes cases such as cash balance conversion (class action), pension benefits in bankruptcy, 401(k) fiduciary liability, (class action), severance benefits, retiree medical plans, survivor benefits, third party administrator disputes, long term disability benefits, group life & health plan benefits, health plan reimbursement levels (class action), and career highlights.
Dr. Johnson brings practical, real-world experience to all expert assignments. Prior to founding ERISA Benefits Consulting, Dr. Johnson served as Managing Director of Benefits Compliance & Pensions in American Airlines. He was an attorney at Southwestern Bell Corporation. He also served as an Associate Professor of Communication in Texas Wesleyan University and as an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Houston.
He managed $14 billion in pension assets for over 100,000 plan participants and had responsibility for group life & health plans with over 300,000 covered lives during his tenure at American Airlines. Dr. Johnson has negotiated union contracts for group life, health, disability, pension and 401(k) plans. He is a frequent speaker on ERISA topics.
He is a licensed attorney in Texas and certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization as a Labor and Employment Law Specialist. He is also experienced in arbitration matters.
Dr. Johnson received his J.D. from University of Houston. He finished his B.A. in History from University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he pursued his M.A. in Mass Communication and received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies.
Dr. Johnson continues to teach on a part-time basis, currently as an Adjunct Professor of Business Communication at Tarrant County College and for the Texas Department of Insurance.
