Portland, OR, October 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- viaLanguage, a leader in healthcare translation and web site localization services, is pleased to announce the winner of their annual Translation Grant Program, which honors an innovative healthcare organization that seeks to improve the health and access to healthcare of underserved, ethnic communities. This year's recipient is Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut. The hospital will receive $5000 of in-kind translation services.
Bridgeport Hospital is a private, not-for-profit acute care hospital located in Connecticut’s most populous city, primarily serving patients from Fairfield and New Haven Counties. They serve a large minority population including Hispanic or Latino of any race making up 32% of the population, Italian, 8.6%; Irish, 5.1%; Portuguese, 2.9%; Polish, 2.8%; and German, 2.4%.
“In diverse urban centers like the greater Bridgeport area, medical care is fraught with barriers for the many patients who do not speak English. Many non-English speakers postpone medical care until their problem becomes an emergency or they don’t receive optimum benefit from their care as a result of the language barriers,” said Lynn Charbonneau, Director of Patient Relations, Bridgeport Hospital.
“We are thrilled to receive the grant from viaLanguage. This will help us continue to address disparities in access to healthcare while improving patient outcomes for those populations.”
“Bridgeport Hospital shares our same commitment: remove language barriers in order to improve access to quality healthcare for underserved minority populations,” said Nancy Pautsch, Strategic Account Executive, Healthcare Business Unit, viaLanguage. “The goal of our Translation Grant Program is to support healthcare organizations whose budgets don’t always cover the increasing demands.”
