Sue Chase Harmon to Speak on Egyptian Art at Adelphi University on November 1, 2009

Garden City, NY, October 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Speaking on Egyptian artwork exhibited in the museum, Ms. Harmon will bring to light the history and legacy behind pieces retrieved from Egypt over the past century. Through acquisitions and excavations, the Museum’s collection has grown substantially, and now comprises a variety of work from every period of ancient Egypt’s long history, beginning with the Predynastic Period, at about 3,500 B.C., and extending through to the Coptic and Byzantine eras approximately four thousand years later. The current exhibition, “Egypt Reborn, Art for Eternity,” features nearly 1,300 works from the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent Egyptian art collection.

Ms. Harmon has been a docent at the Brooklyn Museum for more than three decades. During her tenure, she has led tours for exhibitions in all collection areas, though the Egyptian Collection remains her primary focus. Beginning in 1978 with “Africa in Antiquity, the Arts of Ancient Egypt and the Sudan,” a groundbreaking exhibition on Nubian Art, Ms. Harmon has continued to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for Egyptian art by leading tours in exhibitions such as “Egyptian Art From the Brooklyn Museum,” “Cleopatra's Egypt: Age of the Ptolemies,” “Mistress of the House, Mistress of Heaven,” “Jewish Life in Ancient Egypt: A Family Archive,” and “Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Egypt from the British Museum,” among others.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Adelphi University Library. Founded in 1947, the organization aims to build up a greater realization of the importance of the library to the future development of the University.
