Nude Mannequins Cause Commotion in Malta
A fashion retail shop in Malta which launched an awareness campaign against Sex Trafficking, through its foundation “The DNA EMPORIUM Foundation,” caused quite a steer on Friday when police entered it's premises and told them to dress up its Mannequins.
Mosta, Malta, October 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The organisation has been raising eyebrows with its naked mannequins, which portray an image of a male mannequin holding a female figure mannequin tied by the waist to a chain.
The idea is to show the very real situation whereby 29,000,000 people world-wide are forced into modern day slavery. The vast majority of these are forced into the sex trade industry. It is believed that 1.8 million children are also forced into the sex trade with more than 900,000 people per year being abducted for the industry.
“It is absurd, that a couple of plastic dolls should cause such mayhem. Should we pull down all the manifestations of nude portraits, and sculptures spread around the world, including places of worship? Should we not allow our children to play with dolls because a plastic naked body is exposed if the child changes the dolls clothes? People should be more concerned at the real plight of the illicit sex industry, than with a couple of harmless mannequins,” said founder Marcel Ellis.
Mr. Ellis thinks the police report to be so absurd, that he intends to ignore the police request and leave his mannequins naked. “We are not breaking any laws. If persons are offended by our nude mannequins on religious grounds, then I would invite them to pay a visit to the Vatican.”
The foundation is planning a high profile campaign to raise awareness on this very real problem. It is already working in conjunction with the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem - Malta and the Rotaract Club Malta La Valette, as well as local personalities.
