Fowler Software Design Enhances App for University of Maryland Medical System’s Medical Encyclopedia
Denver, CO, October 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Denver-based custom software development company, Fowler Software Design, recently partnered with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) to enhance their first iPhone App for approval into the iTunes App Store.
Marc Laytar, Manager of Web Production, was playing with his new iPhone when he realized the potential for driving traffic to the UMMS main website through a Medical Encyclopedia app for the iPhone. He recognized that the iPhone was making information more readily available to anyone who wanted it, anywhere, anytime. UMMS took advantage of this to share their medical encyclopedia with anyone who wanted to see and use it.
Laytar used the available app toolkit to create the first app, and then reached out to Fowler Software Design to help enhance the app so it would be accepted into the iTunes App Store. Fowler Software Design's iPhone application service line was formed in early-2009. “Fowler has always stayed at the forefront of current technologies, and with the success of the iPhone and people’s desire to have everything at their fingertips, it just made sense for us to help our clients put their information in as many hands as possible,” said U.B. Ciminieri, VP of Sales and Marketing for Fowler Software Design.
Within one week of its July 21, 2009 release in the iTunes App Store, the UMMS Medical Encyclopedia ranked #3 in the medical category. After three months there have been more than 160,000 downloads of the app, and it’s ranked between #4 and #5 for the past two months. Currently, on weekdays the app is downloaded consistently more than 1,600 times per day, and on the weekends, more than 1,850 times. They reached 2,100 downloads in one day during their first week of release.
Through the use of the Medical Encyclopedia app, UMMS has seen an increase of web traffic to their main website from 0.5% to 4.5%, or 4,200 visits per day.
Laytar had one piece of advice for people looking to create an iPhone app for the iTunes App Store. “Name the app something basic, something that people will actually search for, in order to see results. If the name is too obscure, people will not find it.” Therefore, if you type in the words “medical encyclopedia” in the iTunes search box, you will find the UMMS app right away.
