The mission of The Andean Project, in collaboration with The Andean Collection is to promote the economic, cultural and social rights of its artisans and their families. These rights are collectively defined as the rights to basic human needs, such as to housing, food, decent employment, cultural identity, health services, and education.
The Andean Project’s first initiative will pay the secondary school fees for their artisans and artisans’ children, who live in the poverty stricken coastal and mountainous regions of Ecuador. Costs associated with attending high school amount to approximately $300/student per year. In Ecuador where the per capita income is $7,500 per year and 40% of the population lives in poverty, the costs associated with attending high school are often a strong barrier to pursuing secondary education.
