The Andean Collection Announces Launch of Non Profit Arm: The Andean Project

New York, NY, October 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Andean Collection, a leading eco-fashion accessory company, today announced the launch of its non-profit arm, The Andean Project. The mission of The Andean Project, in collaboration with The Andean Collection is to promote the economic, cultural and social rights of its artisans and their families. These rights are collectively defined as the rights to basic human needs, such as to housing, food, decent employment, cultural identity, health services, and education.

The Andean Project’s first initiative will pay the secondary school fees for their artisans and artisans’ children, who live in the poverty stricken coastal and mountainous regions of Ecuador. Costs associated with attending high school amount to approximately $300/student per year. In Ecuador where the per capita income is $7,500 per year and 40% of the population lives in poverty, the costs associated with attending high school are often a strong barrier to pursuing secondary education.

The Andean Collection, the commercial arm of The Andean Project, is a fashion forward New York-based jewelry company that specializes in fair trade and eco-friendly designs, made out of seeds that have been sustainably harvested from the rainforests of South America. Employment creation is the main focus of The Andean Collection, while The Andean Project will focus on providing supplemental social services.

The AC is currently available in over 50 high-end boutiques nationwide, including eco-fashion boutiques Kaight and Sustainable NYC in Manhattan. Customers can also purchase the line online at www.theandeancollection.com where prices range from $14 to $59.

About The Andean Collection, commercial arm of The Andean Project
The Andean Collection is a New York-based jewelry company that specializes in fair trade and eco-friendly designs. Amanda Judge, owner of The Andean Collection, founded the company while earning her M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University where she studied survival strategies for women in extreme poverty. Her research on this topic led her to the indigenous artisans of northern Ecuador who create jewelry from eco-friendly, rainforest seeds. In order to introduce these natural materials to the U.S. market and to increase the standard of living for these artisans, Judge created The Andean Collection in September 2008. She currently resides in Manhattan’s East Village.
