Almost 13 Tonnes of Used Batteries Collected in Nine Months

Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, Hon. George Pullicino, has today visited one of the outlets participating in the National Battery Buster Campaign, which is managed by WasteServ Malta Ltd and sponsored and supported by FIMBank p.l.c.

Birkirkara, Malta, November 01, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Hon. Pullicino lauded Year 6 students from the Birkirkara Primary Schools present for the activity for promoting such environmental initiatives. He stated that “thanks to the Battery Buster Campaign, the amount of batteries collected by WasteServ during the first nine months of this year exceeds the amount collected in 2008.” Minister Pullicino urged the young battery busters to “each send an email, promoting this campaign to ten of your friends requesting the recipients to forward it to yet another ten of their friends. In this way, the campaign will reach many more people and we stand to benefit from it all”.

During this activity, the students were accompanied by the environmental hero Batterina and their task was to encourage customers to take part in the Battery Buster Competition by placing a minimum of five used batteries in a sealed paper bag, affix a label bearing one’s contact details, and deposit it in a Battery Buster Bin found in any of the participating outlets. The more bags deposited, the greater the chance of winning one of the prizes, which include a TFT 32” Flat Screen TV, a Digital MiniDV Camcorder and a WebSurfer Netbook.

After targeting schools earlier this year, the Battery Buster Campaign is now focusing on supermarkets, shopping complexes and other centrally-located retail outlets in Malta and Gozo. For this purpose, Battery Buster Bins were installed in over 45 commercial establishments in various locations where costumers can dispose of their used batteries in an environmentally sustainable manner, while at the same time participating in a competition with attractive prizes to be won.

Outlets which have kindly agreed to install Battery Buster Bins on their premises to date include Agenda Bookshops, Arkadia Foodstores (Gozo and Portomaso), Chain Supermarket, Carters Supermarket, GS Superstore, JB Stores, Peacocks, Pedigree Toyshops, Piazza Italia, Scan Computers, Scotts Supermarkets, Shoppers Discount Supermarket, Shopwise Discount Store, Smart Supermarket, things*, The Duke and Tiġrija Palazz.

Further details about the Battery Buster Campaign, as well as downloadable labels to be affixed to the exterior of the bags, can be found on the official website www.batterina.net.
