Writing Books Saved Couple's Sanity While Traveling

Phoenix, AZ, November 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- What do you do to keep from going stir crazy while traveling hours a day cross country in a motorhome? This was Linda Dewalt’s dilemma as the retired couple took off to see the USA. Jim’s solution (and salvation) was to tell her to open up the laptop and start composing. He even gave her the idea for their first book and the rest is history. Jim and Linda, aka J L Dewalt, are now on their third novel. Being retired educators, it was natural that the first two would be children’s novels – Nat In Time Destination: The Civil War and The Innovators Another Nat In Time Adventure. The one they are writing now, Fear of Dreams, is not. And that is giving them quite a challenge and plenty of fun.

“It’s a whole different animal,” Jim says, comparing children’s genre to a good adult read. “We find we are laughing at ourselves as we try to bring our minds out of our first character’s eleven year old body and into an older one.”

Jim, a retired principal, and Linda, a retired classroom teacher, know how to inspire children to read and so, crafting books that met the right criteria was not difficult.

“Books for children should be relevant and meaningful,” Linda says. “And they should capture the child’s imagination. We set out to create books that compliment the elementary child’s American History curriculum while giving them a story line into which they could sink their teeth.”

“Nat, our main character, is in fifth grade,” Jim explains. “He has quite an adventure in the first book and in the second, he ends up taking an unexpected friend with him.”

“A girl,” Linda adds. “We had fun developing a friendship between a boy and girl – something kids at that age are reluctant to do.”
