HammerTap Compares Amazon and eBay Selling Prices for Season’s Popular Toys

Orem, UT, November 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- HammerTap, the industry leader in eBay market research, compared the selling prices of some of this season’s most popular gift items on Amazon.com and eBay.com. HammerTap research included items such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2® from Infinity Ward, the Edward Twilight® Barbie doll by Mattel®, and Zhu Zhu Pet® Hamsters.

“On the surface, it seems that these toys typically sell at a higher price on Amazon,” says Jen Cano, HammerTap research expert. “But, if you dig deeper into the research, you can find selling patterns some elite eBay sellers are using that result in higher prices and higher sell-through rates than those on Amazon.”

Cano reports that on the eBay marketplace, the average selling price for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is around $48, as compared to the going rate of $59.95 on Amazon. But, research shows that eBay retailers who offered free shipping for this item sold the game for $68, 100% of the time. Also, eBay listings in the Regular format with a Buy It Now option sold for an average of $62 at a 92% sell-through rate.

The Edward Twilight Barbie doll sells for around $25 on Amazon.com, but on eBay 47% of these listings sold and made an average price of $31.30. eBay sellers who added the word “Mattel” to the title increased their sell-through rate to 83% and their prices to $34.

Amazon.com retailers make considerably more than eBay sellers on Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster. The Hamster typically sells for around $31 on Amazon, while the average selling price for eBay retailers is $25. The good news for retailers in both marketplaces, though, is that although the item sells for $8 at Wal-Mart, many locations are out of stock. This leaves a wide window of opportunity for online retailers to find the product at their local Wal-Mart store and make a tidy profit on the international online market.

“The advantage of market research,” says Cano, “is that retailers can use it to discover how to outperform average sellers, ending up with higher profits and better success rates.”
