Express Logic’s ThreadX® RTOS Powers ARM’s New Cortex-R4 Processor

ARM again chooses ThreadX for use in core development. Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS) with over 300 million deployments, today announced that its ThreadX® RTOS is now available for the ARM® CortexTM-R4 processor.

San Diego, CA, October 04, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS) with over 300 million deployments, today announced that its ThreadX® RTOS is now available for the ARM® CortexTM-R4 processor. ThreadX is a small footprint, lightning-fast RTOS that is ideal for resource-constrained designs that demand extremely low overhead, fast real-time responsiveness and ease-of-use for quick time to market.

ARM’s CortexTM-R4 processor is the first deeply embedded processor to be based on the ARMv7 architecture and is targeted at high-volume, deeply embedded applications such as hard-disk drives, inkjet printers and automotive systems. The Cortex-R4 incorporates ARM’s Thumb-2 technology, an innovation that has enabled partners to combine the minimal memory footprint of 16-bit Thumb code with the high performance of 32-bit ARM code. ThreadX is especially effective at using a minimal amount of memory, leaving more for the application, and helping to reduce power consumption and accompanying heat.

Following the same engineering approach established with the M3 earlier this year, ARM used ThreadX extensively during the development of the Cortex-R4 and its integrated, advanced interrupt handling capabilities as part of a comprehensive validation process. ARM’s engineers were able to quickly simulate complex environments, substantially reducing test development times and enabling the company to release the Cortex-R4 processor on schedule.

“As with the Cortex-M3, ThreadX enabled us to test many of the operating characteristics of the Cortex-R4 processor to ensure it would perform well in the most demanding of real-time applications,” commented Richard York, CPU product manager at ARM. “Express Logic’s ThreadX is extremely easy to use, and its performance is an outstanding match for the high-performance Cortex-R4.”

“We continue to feel honored by ARM’s choice to use our ThreadX RTOS to validate the design of their new Cortex microprocessors,” commented William E. Lamie, president of Express Logic. “ARM’s continued use underscores the value of ThreadX as one of the most dependable and reliable RTOSes for ARM processors. ARM Partners can be confident that the combination of the Cortex-R4 processor and ThreadX has been well tested, and has passed with flying colors.”

Developers can build ThreadX/Cortex-R4 applications using ARM’s RealView® development suite, IAR’s Embedded Workbench®, Wind River Workbench™, Green Hills MULTI®, and GNU tools, delivering the widest choice of development tools of any RTOS on the market.

ARM used ThreadX with their ARM RealView® Developer Suite of tools, including their C compiler, RealView debugger, and RealView ICE. RealView tools provide kernel-aware Halt-Mode debugging of ThreadX-based applications, as well as advanced Run-Mode debugging for non-stop operation during test.

Shipping and Availability
