Colonial Heritage Community Unites to Raise Funds and Awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease

Residents at Lennar’s Colonial Heritage Community Raised More Than $7,500 for Alzheimer’s Research.

Williamsburg, VA, November 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- More than 100 residents from Lennar’s active adult community, Colonial Heritage joined together to participate in the Williamsburg Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, an event to raise funds, awareness, and research for Alzheimer’s disease.

Led by residents, Gary and Ann Carpenter, the Colonial Heritage team raised more than $7,500 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The Memory Walk is a very powerful event,” said Marjorie Hilkert, Williamsburg Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Chairman and Colonial Heritage resident. “My father suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and I, along with my mother serve as his caregivers. It was an inspiration to see so many people, especially from Colonial Heritage rally around such an important cause. There may not be a cure yet for this devastating disease, but there is always hope.”

To help distinguish Colonial Heritage residents from the 43 participating teams in the event, Lennar Corporation, the community’s developer, donated hats. This donation helped identify Colonial Heritage residents and, as a result, they were recognized for having the largest team with 116 walkers.

“The amazing success of the Williamsburg Memory Walk this year stems from the fact that Colonial Heritage residents have made a very conscious effort to bring attention to the issues that might be affecting their over-55 neighbors,” Hilkert said. “The Colonial Heritage team demonstrated an overwhelming message that as a community, we care.”

To further increase awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and for Alzheimer’s disease caregivers, Colonial Heritage implemented the Caregivers Support Group. This group offers an outlet for people seeking information, support, guidance and resources.

The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Colonial Heritage clubhouse in Williamsburg at 2:30 p.m. and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
