Mellace Family Brands Fights Hunger Through Mama Cares

Foundation set up to help those in need – here and abroad – is addressing the needs of kids suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Carlsbad, CA, November 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Mellace Family Brands, a snack food innovator known for a diverse product line that includes tree nuts, peanuts, snack mixes, and enrobed chocolate items, today announced that The Mama Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization set up by Mellace Family Brands, is embarking on a major initiative to provide aid to kids suffering from severe acute malnutrition. While the foundation will continue to support many of the causes it has in the past, it will now focus on fighting world hunger.

Every six seconds, a child dies because he/she did not have access to essential nutrients. According to the World Health Organization, 178 million children are malnourished across the globe. And malnutrition is the underlying cause of death for between three and five million children under five every year. “When I hear the statistics, I just feel sick,” said Mike Mellace, chief executive officer, Mellace Family Brands. “We can and must do more. The Mama Cares Foundation is utilizing our food innovation expertise to come up with a solution. And we are in discussion with several key international organizations about partnering to distribute our potentially life-saving products to children in need around the world.”

With the holiday season approaching, The Mama Cares Foundation encourages everyone who can to reach out and help someone in need. “We will be preparing our usual Thanksgiving and Holiday gift baskets for local families,” said Mellace. “Every outreach, big and small, makes a difference.”
