According to the Aviation Consumer Protection Division of the Department of Transportation's Airline Animal Incident Reports for 2009, pets do not always fare well. Of the 32 animal incidents encountered through November 2009, airlines self-reported 22 deaths, 6 injuries and 4 losses.

In 2000, then President Clinton passed The Safe Air Travel for Animals Act forcing airlines to severely modify the transport of live animals.
