Staffing Solution Gives Nurses Freedom to Choose Days, Hours They Can Work

South Nassau’s FlexChoiceRN program lets nurses determine the days and hours they can and can’t work at South Nassau and gives them unprecedented access to unit staffing needs as well as the capability to apply to fill those needs.

Oceanside, NY, December 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The nurse’s burden of balancing personal life with career generates overwhelming stress and turmoil that leads many specialty-trained registered nurses, in varying stages of their careers, to leave the profession.

South Nassau Communities Hospital, in Oceanside, NY, recently implemented an innovative, flexible scheduling program that alleviates that burden and enables registered nurses to continue their rewarding careers if they desire. South Nassau’s innovative new FlexChoiceRN program lets nurses determine the days and hours they can and can’t work at South Nassau and gives them unprecedented access to unit staffing needs as well as the capability to apply to fill those needs.

“At South Nassau, we understand and strive to ensure that each member of our team of nurses, physicians, allied staff and administrators is able to maintain a healthy balance between his or her professional and personal life,” said Yvette Mooney, RN, senior vice president of patient care services. “We believe that South Nassau FlexChoiceRN will help us achieve that objective while creating opportunity and options for nurses to pursue and continue their careers at South Nassau.”

South Nassau FlexChoiceRN is proving to be an attractive employment solution for per diem registered nurses. Less than a month after launch, South Nassau’s Nurse Recruitment and Retention Department has hired 67 new nurses whose rate of pay is determined by the scheduling option they select.

Hired talent receives a comprehensive non-traditional orientation and on-boarding, which includes clinical orientation, classroom and online education.

In addition to the flexible scheduling, South Nassau FlexChoiceRN also features an on-line, real-time central staffing office that uses customized scheduling programming and communication platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and text messaging.

“As a result, nurses are able to update or customize their schedules from a PDA or any computer with Internet connection and receive instant notification about openings and available hours,” said Ms. Mooney.
