Rock Church's Miles McPherson to Present Mayor Jerry Sanders with Completion of 100,000 Volunteer Hours to City of San Diego

San Diego, CA, December 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On Friday, December 18, at 10 AM at the Jackie Robinson YMCA, Pastor Miles McPherson of the Rock Church and Mayor Jerry Sanders will participate in a press conference regarding the completion of the Rock's 100,000 DO Something volunteer hours this year. Valued at more than $1.6 million*, these city-transforming hours specifically target community projects identified by Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Earlier this year, the Rock Church launched the DO Something volunteer campaign, an initiative that encourages people to play an active role in the improvement of their community. The campaign has been a welcome response to the current economic crisis. The church is close to its goal of 600,000 DO Something volunteer hours, 100,000 of which have been committed to the City of San Diego.

One of the events that embodies the Rock's DO Something campaign is Toys for Joy. Held this past weekend, more than 2,300 volunteers from the Rock Church, 25 area churches and community organizations partnered together in Logan Heights for Toys for Joy. The event, which drew 8,375 people, provided 10,000 toys, clothing, health care, and job assistance for the community.

As part of the press conference, the Rock will also present Michael Brunker, Executive Director of the Jackie Robinson YMCA, with 1,000 toys collected as part of the Toys for Joy event.

San Diego City Councilman Ben Hueso, whose Eighth District was served Toys for Joy, attended and said the impact of the event on the community was immeasurable. The Councilman, who grew up in the neighborhood reminisced about playing football in the park where the event was held, and said the outreach promoted a spirit of giving and brotherhood.

In 2010, the Rock Church will continue to focus on volunteerism throughout San Diego, and challenge other organizations within and outside the city to do the same.
