A Year in the Life of GVI: 2009 Review...
From Obama to H1N1 to financial crisis to the death of the King of Pop, 2009 has been some year…
Boston, MA, December 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- 2009 has been no different for ethical volunteering organization Global Vision International (GVI). The year has been an unprecedented success, with bookings every month up 50% from the same month in 2008. And with well over 2,000 volunteers traveling with GVI in 2009, this has enabled GVI to not just continue, but increase their support and services to international charities, non-profits and governmental agencies all over the world with new programs, and still yet more to come in 2010.
Some highlights from the year include…
In Africa, GVI introduced two new orphanage volunteering projects in Kenya and South Africa, both of which have proved popular with volunteers and in the case of South Africa, also with the government, with a visit from Deputy President, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, to round off a great year.
On GVI’s teaching and community development projects in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Peru, 2009 has seen 386 volunteers making up roughly 90,000 teaching hours while on the side has seen 150 energy efficient stoves built for members of the communities with which we work.
In Ecuador, in the deepest darkest Amazon jungle, GVI recorded 49 new species to add to the Yachana Reserve species list, while 82% of all GVI Amazon volunteer’s money was spent directly in the field.
Finally, in Mexico on GVI’s marine conservation expeditions over the past several years, over 800 non-specialist expedition members have been trained in basic baseline data under the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Synoptic Monitoring Program. Research has also clocked up over 136,000 underwater monitoring hours and over 3,200 monitoring dives. GVI’s Regional Director, Daniel Ponce-Taylor on the last few years: “…GVI in Mexico has obtained an incredible amount of coral reef data and knowledge. We are very proud to work with one of the most recognized NGOs in Mexico, Amigos de Sian Ka’an, in transforming all that data into sustainable management strategies for the areas where we work.”
