Michal’s “My Baby” Hits #1 on Popstation Charts
Emmy-award winner Michal Towber reached #1 on Popstation for her rendition of “My Baby.” The results were in at midnight today after five weeks of voting. Her win makes her eligible for a record deal offered by Popstation once every three months. Michal’s “My Baby” can be streamed for free at http://popstation.com/users/view/1195
New York, NY, January 06, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Popstation is the latest internet music craze, a website combining karaoke and American Idol-style competition, without a live panel of judges. Anyone with a microphone can enter the contest, sing their rendition of a Popstation song and hope to be voted up the charts by listeners. For singers like Michal Towber the contest is fun but also serious work. “Landing a record deal would be my crowning professional achievement,” the artist said today in a telephone interview.
Popstation will award “The Big Deal” to one #1 artist every three months, which according to the website includes an all expense paid three night stay in New York City during which a professional production team will record an album for the winner.
But artists need more than a great set of pipes to win The Big Deal, they need creativity too. The Popstation Team said on the site’s forum: “…come up with your own style, we encourage originality with the songs. We look forward to hearing you ‘Make it your own’!” The website also advises: “Artists that prove themselves to be vocal superstars, add emotion to the music, and make the songs their own have a better shot at being selected.”
Without a record deal independent artists -- even successful ones like Michal Towber, whose music has been featured on the Daytime Television Drama One Life To Live -- have limited means to penetrate the mass market. “You have powerful tools like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, but it’s hard reaching large audiences without the marketing muscle a record label can provide,” offered Michal.
Whether or not Michal Towber wins The Big Deal, she has no regrets. “It’s been a great ride and I recommend aspiring artists check out Popstation.”
Michal Towber’s original music is available on facebook, or iTunes. She is performing live in New York City at the Triad (158 W. 72nd Street) on January 28th at 9 PM.
