Margaret Wingrove Dance Company Presents Great Expectations
Now in their 28th year, San Jose based Margaret Wingrove Dance Company presents a dance interpretation of Charles Dickens’ haunting novel, Great Expectations. The performance, which runs January 7 - 10 at the San Jose Stage, follows the story of Pip, who meets an escaped convict in a graveyard and follows his development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his “great expectations.”
San Jose, CA, January 06, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Over the past twenty-eight years, artistic director and choreographer Margaret Wingrove has produced inspired dance performances from the works of authors T.S. Eliot, Tennessee Williams and Sylvia Plath and the paintings of Edvard Munch. Most recently, the critically acclaimed company presented an adaptation of Bo Caldwell’s best-selling novel, The Distant Land of My Father.
In January 2010, the Margaret Wingrove Dance Company is thrilled to present the world premiere of Great Expectations, based on Charles Dickens’ haunting novel.
Adapted for dance and choreographed by Margaret Wingrove, recipient of a 2009 Silicon Valley Awards Arts Council Fellowship, the performance, which is set in the Victorian period of London in 1861, follows the story of Pip, a poor orphan boy who meets an escaped convict in the village graveyard, receives a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, but coldhearted ward, Estella, and benefits from the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor. Audiences will be enthralled as they watch Pip's development despite adversity as he discovers the true nature of his “great expectations.”
Great Expectations features company dancers Brendan Barthel, Michael Danner, Michael Howerton, Andrea Moody and Lori Seymour. They will be joined by Amy Briones, Shaina Leibson, and Robert Raney, all guest artists from Ballet San Jose. Musical masterpieces composed by Aram Khachaturian, Edward Elgar, and Erich Korngold help to bring this haunting tale to life.
Performances run January 7 - 10 at the San Jose Stage, 490 South First Street in San Jose. For tickets visit www.mwdance.com
