A Stinky Subject Self-Published

Olathe, KS, January 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Karen Jones just released her first book, The Squishy, Stinky Diaper through CreateSpace.com, an Amazon.com company.

Mrs. Jones wrote and illustrated the story for her two daughters. Once completed, she sent the manuscript out to several publishers for consideration, but the standard response time of six months left her spinning her wheels for something to do with it while she waited. Although hoping for the book to be picked up by a traditional publisher, she knew she faced long odds.

Mrs. Jones decided to try self-publishing as a way to get her book out to her market while she waited to hear back from the publishers she submitted to. She chose CreateSpace.com for it’s lower price, free ISBN number, and association with Amazon.com.

She gave an early copy of her book to her daughter’s preschool to gather feedback from the teachers and staff. Later she offered a full preview on her website and joined several online writer’s groups where she asked other members for reviews. Using this information, she perfected her story and illustrations until she had a finished version she felt was suitable for publication. “I wouldn’t expect readers to pay good money for a book that wasn’t of professional quality. So, I was very careful to create the best product I possibly could.”

Mrs. Jones just approved her final proof Monday and her book is now available in paperback form at CreateSpace.com (https://www.createspace.com/Customer/EStore.do?id=3408714). After being on the market for only two days, she’s thrilled to have already sold a copy. “I haven’t started a marketing campaign yet, and someone still found my book and liked it enough to buy a copy.”

Mrs. Jones is now working on getting the word out through Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites. She is also working on building up a portfolio of illustration work on her website with the goal of becoming a professional children’s illustrator.

She still hopes to work out a deal with a traditional publisher for her book. “I’m hoping a traditional publisher will produce my book in both hard-cover and board-book formats, something CreateSpace isn’t able to do right now.”
