Frank Palisi Chronicles the Sicilian Connection to New Orleans’ Italian Community in Sicily To New Orleans and Beyond, Published by Outskirts Press

New Orleans, LA, January 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- In his meticulously researched volume, Sicily To New Orleans and Beyond, published by Outskirts Press, Frank Palisi traces four hundred years of genealogical history for the transition of thirty-two Italian families from their native Sicily to the new world and the city of New Orleans. Mafia enthusiasts, genealogists, historians and even the most distant relatives will benefit from this thoroughly researched and fascinating book.

After more than two hundred years of emigration from Sicily and the establishment of a homogenous “Little Italy” in the French Quarter and Market area of New Orleans, the Italian community was suddenly terrorized by lynching and murder of their own and, as author Palisi carefully chronicles, they began their dispersal to other areas of the city and the country.

Palisi tells the fascinating story of the 1890 assassination of Irish Police Chief, David Hennessey, and the consequent vengeance lynching of more than a dozen members of the Italian community. Then, just after the turn of the century, a seven year old Italian boy, Walter Lamana, is murdered when his father refuses to comply with the Sicilian Black Hand letter he receives demanding payment for the safety of his son.

The majority of those involved in these turn of the century crimes were from the small Sicilian town of Chiusa Sclafani near Corleone in the province of Palermo. Palisi describes that small town in the book as well as tells in detail of the steamer ship voyages of those who left it and other Sicilian villages for their long sea voyage to America and New Orleans.

The Hennessey assassination and subsequent lynching were the impetus for the HBO movie Vendetta and Tom Smith’s book The Crescent City Lynchings. The Walter Lamana child killing story, however, has not resurfaced for a hundred years, until now in Sicily to New Orleans and Beyond.

Fifteen years and nearly 60,000 hours of research went into this carefully researched book. Thirty-two different Italian family tress are presented, and these expand out into 731 distinct surnames and the further documentation of 2,948 individuals. Also presented are the results of genetic DNA testing and a compilation of twelve complete generations of the Palisi line itself.
