Sagemont, a College Prep in Broward, Helps Students Go the Extra Mile in Planning for the Future

Sagemont offers students the opportunity to experience a taste of life in the real world before graduation. The Academic Internship Program provides students an edge in choosing a future career path.

Weston, FL, January 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Sagemont School is giving students an opportunity to experience life in the real world before they even graduate high school. The Academic Internship Program pairs students with businesses in the community where they work for 5 hours per week. For the first two weeks of the school year, high school students meet with college counselor Mellesia Nelson to complete their resume and go over interviewing skills and professional behavior. Nelson says, “The Sagemont School’s Internship Program provides the students with hands on learning and skill building in the real world. Our students are able to explore a potential career choice before heading to college. Not only does this give them an edge but it also helps them define their future goals.”

Scott Payne, a Sagemont senior is currently interning at Windmill Chiropractic. Scott says, “The internship has been very helpful in understanding my career choice and has given me firsthand experience in my field of interest. It has taught me about the business side of chiropractic medicine.”

Junior, Samuel Vivas, is currently doing an internship at Cleveland Clinic. Because of his involvement during the school year, he is aware of a summer program at the hospital. And because he is already a standout in the internship program, he will have a higher chance of being selected for the summer program.

In addition, during the summer, many Sagemont students take advantage of various programs that will give them a competitive edge after graduation. Wilson Mourad, a Sagemont Senior interested in studying medicine, took part in the Chemistry and Biology Program at Cornell University last summer. “Studying at Cornell was one of the most worthy and enriching experiences in my life. I gained experience in time management, made choices with regard to my responsibilities, independently solved my problems and made new friends.” Mourad, who was at Cornell for 7 weeks, took a chemistry and English class and enjoyed participating in club sports.

Last summer, Melissa Hewitt (10th grade) traveled to a small town just outside of Nice, France to participate in a French Language Immersion Program. With the help of her home stay family which included two teenage brothers, Melissa was able to grasp French much quicker than in her traditional classroom studies. Hewitt felt the program was a double win for her, “I not only learned a lot about the French culture, life and language; I also gained more self-confidence which will definitely benefit me in the future.”

Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School commented, “I am very impressed by our student’s motivation to go beyond their prescribed academics and participate in a variety of very exciting internship and travel programs. These students come back with many success stories that help them as they are applying to the colleges and universities of their choice”
