Bates Creative Group Design of EAA Inaugural Edition of Sport Aviation Magazine Garners Industry and Reader Praise
World-Renowned “Architect of Type” Compliments Work of Silver Spring Design Firm.
Silver Spring, MD, January 19, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Great design makes people sit up and notice. It provokes the intellect. It taps emotion and stimulates adrenaline. Done right, it elicits a “wow!” If a business publication gets this reaction from readers, you know that the design effort hit its mark—and especially if one of your readers is Ed Benguiat.
While you may not have heard the name of this Art Director Hall of Fame inductee, who's a famous American typographer, you’ve probably used one of his over 600 typefaces, like Avant Garde, Bookman, Barcelona, Bauhaus, or Modern. And, you may be familiar with his work. He’s the designer of the logos-mastheads for The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, McCall's, Playboy, and for numerous films.
Once called “the architect of type,” he also happens to be a pilot and an avid reader of Sport Aviation magazine, the 57-year old flagship publication of EAA, the most passionate community of recreational pilots, airplane builders, and airplane restorers.
Last week, Benguiat received the inaugural edition of Sport Aviation magazine. He and a myriad of other readers took the time to write a “wow” letter to the Editor of Sport Aviation complimenting the organization for the design excellence of the new magazine.
Another reader described the magazine’s transformation as “stunning” and “as close to perfection as I have seen.” He adds that “in the past, when any magazine redesigns or ‘reinvents’ itself, it usually means different colors, mastheads, and perhaps a little pizzazz in the layout... but few can truly describe their efforts as an actual paradigm shift… and this, the Version 2.0 of Sport Aviation is, in my mind, such a shift!”
Who gets the credit for such an honor? Bates Creative Group, LLC (BCG), a Silver Spring, MD-based design firm that is setting design standards for business across the United States. The BCG design team played a lead role in delivering the most significant design makeover in the publication's 57-year history and helping EAA meet its publication goals and objectives.
“It’s great to get the attention of a design industry leader—someone who clearly knows and appreciates the best of design. We are honored to have worked with EAA on this important publication and are pleased that their member base has responded so favorably, Benguiat included,” explains Debbie Bates-Schrott, CEO of BCG.
“Our team works very hard to understand an organization’s values, mission, personality, and strategic direction so that we can deliver design excellence that meets business goals. Designing for business results requires creative thinking that owns that space where art and business intersects,” she adds. “It’s what we do best.”
On January 6, 2010, EAA launched Sport Aviation with extensive upgrades and changes based on the input of 20,000 EAA members over the past 18 months. This input informed both the graphic design and content direction.
“Working with the Bates Creative Group was a great experience and definitely contributed to our successful re-launch. Their strategic guidance kept us on track to meet a fairly aggressive re-launch schedule,” notes Mary Jones, Editor, EAA Sport Aviation magazine.
“Their design work speaks for itself; we’re extremely pleased with the ‘look’ of our new magazine. Interacting with their staff has been a positive experience at every turn,” she adds.
