Portable Storage Units Highlighted at Chelsea Farmer’s Market
A quaint hot spot in London uses portable storage to add retail space on-site.
Kansas City, MO, January 19, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is highlighting the creative uses of portable storage this winter.
In our third installment, the NPSA looks at the Chelsea Farmer’s Market in London. UKAttraction.com describes Chelsea Farmer’s Market as an “oasis of calm set back from the busy and fashionable shopping street of King’s Road at the heart of Chelsea. It’s a little shopping center with healthy dinning experiences – and it uses portable storage containers as part of its ambiance.
“The Chelsea Farmer’s Market is one of those jewels that tourists and locals alike enjoy. I’ve heard it’s a great place for celebrity-watching, too,” said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA. "The fact that this project chose to use portable storage units as part of the building mix speaks volumes about the utility of containerized storage.”
The farmer’s market now features three shops built from portable storage containers. Developed by Urban Space Management and engineered by BCS Consulting, the project relied on cranes to drop the containers on site in a single day. The containers themselves are clad in timber and don pitched roofs to match the surrounding architecture.
“This is an especially interesting use of portable storage containers because the containers were adapted to compliment the existing building styles,” says Joel Rathbone, NPSA Operations Manager. "This demonstrates another aspect of the versatility of portable storage.”
