SAT Prep Courses in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio by A+ Advanced Learning Center a Boon for Younger Students
SAT classes in Mason, OH have been filled by what some would call unlikely candidates in a group of middle school students. These students' PSAT and SAT preparation program, started in January by Michael DiSalvo, MA eq and Madhu Sanakari, MBA, has become a new way of thinking about academic achievement in today's competitive world.
Mason, OH, January 20, 2010 --(PR.com)-- January marked the first month of some long-term preparation in Mason for what some may consider unlikely candidates. Several students from the 6th-9th grade began their trek on a course they believe will lead them to success on test day on CollegeBoard’s SAT, the test that determines for many students their future at American universities and colleges. Two experts at A+ Advanced Learning and Test Prep Center have maintained that these students will be quite ready for this test, whether they take it in middle or high school.
Though parents of many 5th graders have requested enrollment information for these SAT and PSAT classes, the founders of this program, Michael DiSalvo, MA eq. and Madhu Sanakari, MBA have limited enrollment to students 6th grade and up to solidify a base for what they consider a long-term process. “It’s up to us to make sure that these students are grouped properly into ability levels,” Mr DiSalvo has said. “There are certain remedial skills you want to see present so that certain members of the group aren’t left behind.” The two teachers have taken the responsibility for the already substantial group by giving them the basic tools to get started: systematic steps in critical thinking, grammar definitions, and number sense. The two have agreed that knowing the foundations are absolutely essential, no matter what age the student.
Contrary to popular belief, students (and non-students) can actually take the SAT at any time. Most importantly for young students, there are even programs such as the Duke University Talent Identification Program that sponsor special programs for those score well on standardized tests in their elementary years. Through Duke’s program, if students do well on the SAT in their 7th grade year, they are recognized for their test scores, provided with detailed information about their abilities, and introduced to a network of academic opportunities and resources available to them based on their scores, including educational programs offered by Duke and others. While a small group qualifies for this program or other similar programs, other students prepare early for the PSAT, the "practice" SAT. Though administered later than the SAT in Duke's program, the PSAT is still administered as early as freshman year in high school. A strong score on the test allows one to qualify the prestigious National Merit Scholarship during one’s junior year of high school, where students are essentially offered a full scholarship to the university of their choice as a reward for their superior test score, strong grade point average, and supplemental essay.
The two SAT teachers, both veterans of standardized test taking and standardized test preparation, provide an interesting East-West combination. Mr Sanakari studied at the prestigious MNIT in India where he excelled in Engineering and Math, having won the National Merit Scholarship and having graduated with high honors. His achievements were capped in college with the Gold Medal and Certificate for Academic Excellence with a 4.0 GPA from the esteemed MNIT in Allahabad. Mr Sanakari then completed his MBA at Xavier University in Cincinnati to introduce him to a stellar career as an IT specialist and manager. Mr Sanakari has also shown himself to be a capable Math teacher. In 2006, all of the students he prepared for the SAT scored above 700 in their Math sections. This should not be surprising as he himself has received perfect scores in the Math sections of the GMAT and GRE. Michael DiSalvo, on the other hand, was able to finish his four-year Bachelor’s degree in three years with a 3.93 GPA at the University of South Florida, where he graduated magna cum laude. His experience with the GRE core test and the Psychology subject test gave him the confidence to know that he too could dominate a standardized test and transmit his techniques to others. His students have scored up to perfect scores on various sections of the SAT and ACT in the past five years. Having shown that his students could perfect their scores in English and Reading Comprehension, Mr DiSalvo will be complementing Mr Sanakari’s mathematics class with his own verbal strategies to complete the SAT course offered in the Greater Cincinnati area.
Though the younger students through 10th grade have already started in their year-long classes at the A+ Advanced Learning and Test Prep Center, a formal SAT class will begin in February as well for those preparing for the May and June administrations of the SAT.
