The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York Raises $60,000 for Haiti Relief
Jamaica, NY, January 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Rev. Dr. Floyd H. Flake, Pastor, The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York and the church’s 23,000 member congregation contribute $60,000 towards Haiti Relief.
On January 12th a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti; which affected millions. According to Rev. Flake, “When people suffer anywhere in the world, it becomes all of our responsibility to act, because we’re all part of the human family.” Pastor Flake says, “the $60,000 raised for the church’s Haiti Relief effort is a testament of how a congregation has come together to support people in need of restoration.”
In an increased effort to show support of the victims of this tragedy; Rev. Flake will lead the congregation in a Prayer and Healing Service for Haiti. This special prayer service will take place on Saturday, February 6th from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Allen members, non-members and community leaders are asked to join them as they collectively come together to pray on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Haiti, as well as those affected in New York City. Prayer will be held at The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York located at 110-31 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica, NY.
The church is taking donations ongoingly on its website at www.allencathedral.org. “We empathize with Haiti and understand this is not an overnight solution. When the cameras are turned off and it’s no longer ‘newsworthy,’ healing and restoration will still be at the forefront of the Haitian community’s difficulties,” says Flake. And according to the Pastor, “we as a church will organize committees to effectively identify the needs of our own Haitian members; utilize our qualified staff to provide professional counseling to those in need; and at the appropriate time, make clothing donations to our brethren in Haiti.”
The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral has become one of the nation’s foremost Christian churches. It is listed among the top 20 churches in America in Outreach Magazine’s Annual Survey. The church also owns expansive commercial and residential developments; a 700-student private school founded by Flake and his wife Elaine, and various commercial and social service enterprises, which has placed it among the nation’s most productive religious and urban development institutions. The corporations, church administrative offices, school, and ministries comprise one of the Borough of Queens’ largest private-sector employers.
