VivoWare to Open Source VivoSocial for Custom Social Networks
Eastport, NY, February 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- VivoWare, Inc today announced plans to release source code for VivoSocial™ as open source. This initiative will let developers worldwide participate in the growth of the industry's most advanced social networking framework for building rich social Internet applications for the DotNetNuke framework. The open source VivoSocial SDK and documentation will be available under the MIT License.
Available since January 2010, the VivoSocial modules includes the technologies developers need to build effective social applications for the DotNetNuke framework. “Open source has been pivotal to the rapid growth of many application, including DotNetNuke itself, and we are excited to release this as open source for the VivoSocial technology,” said Jeff Smith, CSA of VivoWare. “The decision to open source VivoSocial was a completely natural next step. I am incredibly excited to deeply collaborate with the developer community on VivoSocial, and further fuel its momentum and innovation.
By committing to releasing VivoSocial source code to developers as open source, VivoWare is embracing collaboration with the worldwide developer community and enabling other open source projects to take full advantage of the powerful capabilities of the VivoSocial framework. “Open source co-creation is a powerful way to build a strong development community,” said Tim Maler, Business Development Officer of VivoWare. “VivoWare’s decision to open source the VivoSocial SDK is a radical move which should attract a new class of developer and client to the platform.”
Using the MIT license for open sourcing VivoSocial will allow full and free access to source code. Developers will be able to freely download, extend, and contribute to the source code for the VivoSocial components, modules, and application framework. VivoWare also will continue to make the VivoSocial SDK and other VivoSocial products available under their existing commercial licenses, allowing both new and existing partners and customers to choose the license terms that best suit their requirements.
The open source licensing of VivoSocial is part of an initiative to engage the community in the creation of social technology. Starting this week with the 7.0 release of VivoSocial, VivoWare will post daily/weekly software builds of the VivoSocial SDK on the CodePlex site (http://social.codeplex.com). The release of open source VivoSocial under the MIT License will occur by midnight tonight.
