Noble, OK, February 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The economy, technology and a growing trend towards living your dreams is fueling the rise of a new brand of geeky business start ups, according to Home Business Geeks founder, Michelle Waters. Waters, an entrepreneur and educator from Noble, Oklahoma launched HomeBusinessGeeks.com to help these interest geared business ventures develop a professional polish.

“The stereotypical geek has given way to an explosion of people who self-identify as geeks in a variety of interest areas and they are taking those interests and turning them into businesses,” says Waters. “Home Business Geeks provides a platform and a virtual home to support those endeavors in a community of like-minded people.”

Recent studies from the Small Business Administration support Waters’ premise. The December 2009 study, The Nonemployer Startup Puzzle, examined basic statistics about “nonemployer” businesses and showed a clear correlation between unemployment rates and “nonemployer” start ups. Nonemployer refers to businesses that generate full or part time income for their owners and describes most of the visitors to Home Business Geeks.

“When the economy tanks like it has, people start to really look at their lives and some choose to follow dreams by pursuing interest geared businesses rather than looking for a new job,” says Waters, “and while they have great passion, they don’t necessarily have the tools and support to market themselves effectively. That is the void that Home Business Geeks aims to fill.”

Waters background in web development, information marketing and teaching provide only part of the equation.

“This site isn’t just about business. It’s about having fun and being able to laugh at ourselves as we learn and grow, as people and as business owners,” says Waters to explain the laid back feel of the site, “Part of the whole trend is the realization of the fact that you don’t have to be really serious to make serious money doing what you love.”
