Obesity Surgery Consultant’s 40kg Weight Loss After Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure – a Case of "Practice What You Preach"
Michael Dermody of Cosmetic Bliss, specialists in arranging and accompanying patients for weight loss surgery and post-operative weight loss support, had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy in Sept. 2008. He is now 40Kg lighter and is free of the hypertension and other problems which led to his surgery. He believes the Sleeve has advantages over Gastric Banding and Gastric Bypass, and believes it won’t be long before it becomes the first choice for patients looking for weight loss surgery.
Launceston, United Kingdom, February 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Michael Dermody and his Cosmetic Bliss partner Deborah Darling had been bringing patients to Dr Michal Cierny’s Bariatric Clinic in the Czech Republic for weight loss procedures for several years before he underwent the surgery himself. His weight had increased over the years and at age 52 with a BMI of 38+ and other obesity related health problems, surgery was the sensible option.
He made the following comments on his own surgery, and how it helps him when discussing Obesity Surgery with patients.
“Dr Cierny decided I would be a good candidate for the Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) operation. It has become very popular in the last few years, and I think it definitely has the edge over the gastric Band. Dr Cierny is a brilliant surgeon with an excellent safety record, and an expert at this operation. He has performed about 150 of them for us on our UK patients – so I knew I was in safe & experienced hands with him and his team.
About 80% of my stomach was removed, so I have a very small stomach pouch which restricts the amount I can eat. It is a restrictive procedure like a Gastric Band – not like the more complicated Gastric Bypass. It is a ‘once and for all’ solution, with no adjustments such as band fills. Where I believe the Gastric Sleeve really scores over a band or a bypass is that when the large part of the stomach is taken out, you produce very little of the hormone Ghrelin, which is the hormone that gives your brain feelings of hunger.
I can honestly say I don’t get hungry, don’t miss the huge meals I used to eat, and don’t snack between meals any more. I am fitter than I have been for years, and my waistline is down to 32inches. I think the Gastric Sleeve operation is a fantastic thing. I have lost 6.5 stone (40Kg) and I am now at a stable weight of 12 stone (that’s 165-170lbs - or 76Kg, and my BMI is just under 23 – which I think is just about right for me.”
“It certainly helps when giving advice about obesity surgery to have been there yourself – you can really understand what patients have gone through to reach the point of deciding on surgery, and it gives them a lot of confidence to know you have personal experience of how the surgery and the weight loss after surgery works.
I firmly believe that the Sleeve will become the first choice operation for many patients as information on it becomes more widely broadcast – everyone has heard of the band in UK, because of Fern Britton and Anne Diamond, and other celebrity weight loss surgery patients. Perhaps if one or two celebrities had this procedure it would make the public more aware.”
