As reported in The Wall Street Journal, "William Macklowe contacted Mr. Zell, Equity Residential chairman, in early December, offering to discuss a deal. Equity Residential has said that its net effective rent in New York, which includes concessions, has fallen 15% from 2008. Still, the market's average monthly rent tops $2,500, by far the company's most expensive market, according to securities filings."
