Second Annual Charity Race to Honor Swampscott Soldier’s Scholarship Fund

Salem, MA, February 05, 2010 --(PR.com)-- B&S Fitness (http://www.bnsfitness.com/), the largest provider of fitness programs on Boston’s North Shore, is co-managing the “Gold Star Run for Honor” Charity race to honor the life of Swampscott native and soldier Jared Raymond who lost his life in the line of duty in Iraq. For the second year in a row this event is being held to raise scholarship funds in Jared’s name and to show support for our servicemen and servicewomen. According to Kevin Reen, a Swampscott Police Officer and one of the race organizers working with B&S Fitness, “This is a wonderful event that not only honors the life of Jared Raymond – a young man who dreamt of becoming a police office after his military service – but it also allows our community to show support for all our veterans, active soldiers, and military families who are making such a big sacrifice for our country.” The race name ‘Gold Star’ signifies the gold-colored star displayed on a service flag, to indicate that a member of one's family was killed in war as a member of the armed forces. Officer Reen goes on to state that, “I hope that everyone who feels a connection to our troops will participate in this race.”

There are two course lengths, a 5K and a 10K, and the event will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Swampscott High School. There are various categories for race participants including a military category for all current, past, and para-military members who wish to compete against one another. Pre-registration fees start at $25 and for an extra $10, racers can join "Team Jared" where 100% of the additional registration fees go towards the Jared Raymond Scholarship Fund. “Team Jared” racers can also receive special discounts on coaching and other fitness programs from B&S Fitness and B&S Sport Science.
