Valentine's Day: Stepfamily Style

As an agency focused on meeting the needs of those living in stepfamilies, Success for Steps presents Key Opportunity to Demonstrate and Practice Couple Strength this holiday.

Tampa, FL, February 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The United States Greeting Card Association estimates more than 1 billion valentines will be opened this Valentine’ Day. That figure is expected to rise as the number of stepfamilies continues to outnumber first families.

Christina Roach is a professional therapist, National Certified Counselor and founder of Success for Steps, a resource devoted to assisting Bay-area individuals, couples and families make the transition into, and lives within, a stepfamily successful.

“One major obstacle to overcome on the path to building ‘Couple Strength’ is to remember to set aside time exclusively for the couple,” Roach explains. “Valentine’s Day can be a great segue into establishing a ‘date night’ a few times a month.”

Partners need to focus on their relationship and on the aspects of each other that first brought the couple together. By developing this initial facet of ‘Couple Strength,’ partners within a stepfamily then have another opportunity to strengthen their bond. “Rekindling intimacy is so much more than just physical interaction,” says Roach. “Intimacy for any couple spans multiple levels of their relationship and it’s this intimacy that creates both emotional and psychological closeness between partners which strengthens their bond.”

Communication is a vital key to establishing, maintaining and sustaining Couple Strength. Roach recommends partners setting time aside each week to spend quality time together as a couple. When kids are involved this may be accomplished by parking the kids in front of a movie with a pizza while enjoying a meal together to reconnect by focusing conversations on each other and the couple as a whole.

Roach is moderating a series of open discussions regarding the challenges today’s stepfamilies face. She will focus on the importance of building ‘Couple Strength’ from 10am until noon on Saturday, February 27th in the semi-private room within Perkins Restaurant and Bakery (612 N. Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33609) at the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and W. Cass Street.

There is no cost to participate in or attend the event, however, Success for Steps is conducting a food drive on behalf of Metropolitan Ministries and requests each attendee bring a non-perishable food item. Please RSVP to Success for Steps by calling 813-784-8952, or through the web site, www.SuccessForSteps.com.
