Nantucket's Century House Inn Makes Forbes.com Top 5

Nantucket, MA, June 30, 2005 --(PR.com)-- Forbes.com recently recognized Nantucket’s oldest continuously operating guesthouse, the Century House in the Top 5 Eastern U.S Summer destination inns.

Among others recognized in the Summer Destination Guide for 2005 were The Point in New York, Boston’s XV Beacon, The Inn at Great Neck, and the Manor on Golden Pond in Holderness.

The Century House features 16 rooms, from superior to deluxe, along with a cottage that can be rented for weddings and special occasions. Among amenities offered are luxury Molton Brown toiletries, beach towels, terrycloth bathrobes, cable TV with DVD capabilities, daily housekeeping service, and marble bathrooms. The inn has also placed a computer on every floor for business purposes and the property is wi-fi enabled.

Included in the guest’s stay at the Century House is the innkeepers’ signature all you can eat “Gerry’s Berry Buffet Breakfast,” offering custom-made granola (Gerry’s secret recipe), fresh berries, assorted pastries and bagels, juices, and fresh fruits. In the afternoon, the innkeepers bake fresh cookies served with tea or coffee in the main lobby. Refreshments are available throughout the day.

The historic Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century House. Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in several long, successful voyages to hunt whale, and eventually completed the construction of the house in the early 1840’s. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and still exhibits today.

According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to date.
