Popp Begins as Chair of Neurosurgery
Dr. Popp will lead an accomplished team of 14 expert neurosurgeons, along with renowned researchers.
Boston, MA, February 11, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A. John Popp, MD, FACS, in December was appointed Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
In this role, Dr. Popp will lead an accomplished team of 14 expert neurosurgeons, along with renowned researchers, in building on the Department's rich history with Harvey Cushing, MD, and delivering state-of-the-art neurosurgical care for patients with complex conditions. In addition to enhancing the Department's robust research program, Dr. Popp will also continue to lead its Neurosurgery Residency Program, an internationally recognized clinical training program within Harvard Medical School.
The BWH Department of Neurosurgery covers the spectrum of surgically treated disorders of the nervous system and provides excellence in leadership in the major disciplines of neurosurgery, including brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors, epilepsy surgery, neurovascular surgery, spinal and peripheral nerve surgery, and stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, as well as programs in neuroendoscopy, hydrocephalus, interventional MR surgery, and neurological critical care. The Department performs more than 2,600 neurosurgical procedures annually.
An expert in the treatment of brain tumors, vascular disease, and degenerative spine disease, Dr. Popp joined the Department last year as Vice Chair of Business Operations and Education in Neurosurgery. Dr. Popp practiced at Albany Medical Center for over 20 years, where he was the Henry and Sally Schaffer Chair of the Department of Surgery, head of the Division of Neurosurgery, Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Training Program, and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. In 2004, the Schaffer Foundation endowed a chair in Dr. Popp's honor. In 2009, Dr. Popp received the Pillars Award, Albany Medical Center's highest recognition.
Dr. Popp is currently the president of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons (WANS), serves on the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for neurological surgery of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and was Secretary of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies' (WFNS) XIV World Congress of Neurological Surgery, held in Boston this past Fall. Past president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Dr. Popp also has served as Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Treasurer of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, President of the New York State Neurological Society, and Chairman of the Washington Committee for Neurosurgery.
