Discount Cab Headquarters Heads Off the Energy Grid
Arizona Cab Company, Known for the Largest Hybrid Cab Fleet in the Nation, Installs Solar Panels on Its Glendale Headquarters, Reducing CO2 Emissions by 377 Tons the First Year.
Phoenix, AZ, February 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Total Transit, Inc., the parent company of Discount Cab, one of the largest cab companies in the Southwest, is on its way to taking its energy needs off the grid, installing $750,000 worth of solar panels this week at its Glendale headquarters.
The company is now able to generate all of its power from the panels in the winter months and a majority of it in the summer. The 400-panel system constitutes 230 watts of power per panel and is one of the largest installations in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The system will reduce emissions by 377 tons per year, or the equivalent of 9,700 trees absorbing the CO2 gases.
“This was something that we had wanted to do for a long time,” said Craig Hughes, CEO of Total Transit, Inc., the parent company of Discount Cab. “From a business standpoint it makes financial sense. But more importantly than that, it makes good environmental sense. It lessens our carbon footprint even more and provides a model for other businesses to follow.”
Hughes selected Phoenix-based PerfectPower for the installation, adding that it was important to him to keep the project local. PerfectPower is owned and operated by Phoenix residents.
“We believe in community-based initiatives and helping to stimulate the local economy,” Hughes said. “By installing this system, we’ll continue our mission of reducing our emissions while also pouring money back into the greater Phoenix economy.”
Hughes consistently encourages his company to find new and innovative ways to serve its customer base. The company, which operates the largest fleet of Toyota Prius taxis in the nation, instituted its “Free Ride Back” program to keep inebriated drivers off the streets and developed the Total Transit Foundation to give back financially to worthy causes in the community.
