Jason Craighead Debuts Latest Work for Gallery Show, Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser
Raleigh, NC, October 28, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Abstract expressionist Jason Craighead recently unveiled his newest series of paintings at Glance Gallery in Raleigh and donated a unique work to help raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County.
According to Glance Gallery director Bob Doster, the artist’s “understanding of space and line are evident in the many layers he applies to each painting. He uses both graphite and pastels to vary the quality and texture of his lines, and a base layer of long drips to create a sense of depth and direction.”
"I'm always finding new ways to push paint," Craighead said. "Structure and construction itself fascinate me - buildings, cranes, poles - everything you would see walking the streets of downtown. I construct and deconstruct. My paintings are a very physical process.”
For the upcoming Habitat fundraiser, sponsored by Porto, a fine home furnishings store in North Hills, participating artists were asked to “recycle” old doors from Habitat’s ReUse Center into works of original art by translating the store’s slogan, “The Passage to Civilized Living.” Craighead chose a used bi-fold door as his canvas on which he created "bravery," an acrylic, ink, oil pastel and graphite composition that is on display in Vivace, an upscale restaurant in North Hills, until it returns to Porto for the November 11 gala/auction.
“The raw, semi-structural appearance of this piece is to reflect the beginnings of the construction for a better collective existence,” the artist says of his door-turned-art. “As long as our society continues to place boundaries, labels, division by ‘classes’ and races, minorities and majorities, and we choose to live in fear of being defined by some other term than human, we will remain ignorant of our only chance to enjoy this existence. Live life together with all the humans.”
Craighead’s abstract compositions have received numerous awards, plum commissions, and a strong national patron base that includes both large corporations and private collectors, including former Senator John Edwards.
The artist was also featured in the fall quarter issue of Art Galleries & Artists of the South magazine this year. He is represented in Glance Gallery, the Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst, New Elements Gallery in Wilmington, and Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte.
Glance Gallery is located at 311 West Martin Street in downtown Raleigh. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on the current show and Jason Craighead, call 919-821-2200 or visit the website: www.glancegallery.com.
