Strong 2nd Half Home Sales Help Cook County and Metro Chicago Real Estate Market Post 2009 Rebound; RE/MAX Regains Lead in Homes Sold

Elgin, IL, February 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Home sales during 2009 in Cook County, Ill., bounced back thanks to strong activity in the second half of the year. Homes sales in the county were up 1.7 percent, rising from 39,902 in 2008 to 40,582 in 2009. The seven-county metropolitan Chicago real estate market posted a 1.5 percent increase. At the same time, RE/MAX regained its position as the leading brokerage organization for home sales in the county.

During the second six months of last year, Cook County home sales were 24 percent higher than for the same period in 2008. The entire metro area enjoyed a 23 percent increase.

RE/MAX agents accounted for 5,930, or 14.6 percent, of all residential listings sold in Cook County during 2009, up from 14.1 percent in 2008, making them number one in that category, according to Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC (MRED). RE/MAX agents also led in buyer representation, assisting buyers with 5,022 transactions, or 12 .4 percent, up from 11.5 percent a year earlier.

RE/MAX also retained leadership in total transactions closed in Cook County, representing either the buyer or seller in a total of 10,952 transactions, or 13.5 percent, compared to 12.8 percent in 2008. The next four firms in the total transaction category are Coldwell Banker (12 percent), Century 21 (5.9 percent), Prudential (5.2 percent) and @Properties (5 percent).

The top five real estate organizations in Cook County during 2009, in terms of attached and detached residential listings sold, were RE/MAX with 5,930 (14.6 percent), Coldwell Banker with 5,266 (13 percent), Prudential with 2,200 (5.4 percent), Century 21 with 2,076 (5.1 percent) and @Properties with 2,032 (5 percent). Data maintained by MRED may not reflect all real estate activity in a specific market area.

For the same time period, RE/MAX agents led Cook County in buyer representation, closing 5,022 (11.5 percent) of all sales made of listed homes in 2009, topping Coldwell Banker with 4,487 (11.1 percent), Century 21 with 2,680 (6.6 percent), Prudential with 2,050 (5.1 percent) and @Properties with 2,044 (5 percent). RE/MAX remained the market-share leader in buyer representation across the metropolitan Chicago real estate market during 2009, completing 16.4 percent of all buyer transactions.

Since 1989, RE/MAX has led the metropolitan Chicago residential real estate market based on closed sales volume. In 2009, RE/MAX agents listed 18.9 percent of all homes sold in the seven-county Chicago real estate market, a larger percentage than any other real estate organization.
