NPSA Congratulates Container City for Portable Storage Innovation

Kansas City, MO, February 18, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Container City recently received a prestigious award for its design-build work on the Dunraven School Sports Hall in South West London. The division of Urban Space Holdings, in collaboration with SCABAL Architects and Furness Engineering, won the 2009 British Construction Industry Award for best "Small Building Project."

The Dunraven School Sports Hall was commissioned by London Borough of Lambeth and funded by the "Building Schools for the Future" scheme. It relies on recycled portable storage containers to make up the building envelope. In all, the Sports Hall offers four courts, including gym space and viewing galleries at the first floor level. The British Construction Industry Award committee described the building as unique, economical and sustainable and mentioned its "good use of colors and texture."

David Boyle, principal of Dunraven School, says the school chose to build with portable storage containers to respond to student interest in the environment, as well as to stretch a tight budget and speed construction. Boyle says the Sports Hall surpassed his expectations. He called the building a landmark and a source of pride for the community. The Sports Hall has been featured in several London newspapers for its innovation.

"The Dunraven School Sports Hall is the first in the world to be constructed from recycled portable storage containers," says John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Beyond the eco-friendly aspects of the design and construction, this sports hall has the added benefit of teaching students about the importance of sustainability.
