David Steiner, CEO of Waste Management, Talks About Extracting Value from Waste on “The CEO Show with Robert Reiss”
David Steiner, CEO of Waste Management was interviewed on The CEO Show with Robert Reiss on January 10, 2010 about how Waste Management has reinvented itself to focus on creating value from waste. Steiner relates how waste is no longer something to be discarded, but should be used as a resource and a fuel for energy generation, “helping the environment and driving profitability.” Steiner also talks about his primary roles as a CEO which are “changing and maintaining the (corporate) culture.”

According to Steiner, “We change with our customers”; he relates how every American puts out 4.5 lbs. of waste a day and how Waste Management has changed that model to every American puts out 4.5 lbs. of material a day. That one word “change” (waste to material) has enabled the company to turn that waste into energy, which helps the environment and drives profitability.
Reiss and Steiner discuss how Waste Management has figured out a system to scientifically understand the potential value of any material. For example, organics which through compositing release 20 – 30% of the potential energy, can, through other systems yield substantially more energy.
Steiner talks about his role as CEO, where he states, “My most important job as CEO is changing and maintaining the (corporate) culture.” He also talks about how his job as CEO is different from past positions as CFO and General Counsel, because now everything is done through people and that it is the people who drive the success of an enterprise.
Reiss closes the interview asking Steiner about the future of Waste Management. Steiner sums it up, saying, “We can both save the planet for my kids and the kids of the 45,000 people who work here and make a lot of money doing it.”
