Miss America 2008 to Speak at University of Colorado at Boulder to Raise Awareness of Eating Disorders
Eating Disorder Center of Denver is event’s primary sponsor
Denver, CO, February 21, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Miss America 2008, Kirsten Haglund, is speaking Tuesday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Colorado at Boulder (Math 100 room) to help raise awareness of eating disorders and help educate women about their right and responsibility to define beauty on their own terms. Eating Disorder Center of Denver is the primary sponsor of the event, which is titled “Freedom from Perfection: Overcoming body wars, diet culture and taking back our souls.”
Haglund struggled with anorexia for several years as an adolescent and therefore chose eating disorder awareness as her platform while participating in the Miss America Organization.
“I saw what an incredible opportunity the crown was to help create an open dialogue about eating disorders,” explains Haglund. “Educating people – especially young women who look to Miss America as a role model – about this deadly disease and the positive impact of loving and respecting oneself, is truly an honor. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to bring hope and a voice to those struggling with an eating disorder.”
“We are thrilled to have a recognized and accomplished eating disorder activist such as Kirsten speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder,” says Tamara Pryor, Ph.D., Clinical Director, Eating Disorder Center of Denver. “Putting a face on the disease and raising awareness of its devastating effects is a key component of effecting positive change in our society. The more we can publicly discuss eating disorders, the more we can help those suffering from the disease.”
