Setting his hand on fire, filling gyms with smoke, exploding flower pots and dangling school principals in the air are all part of Steve Wolf’s “Science in the Movies” show, bringing movie stunts into classrooms across the country.
During a vivid 1-hour glimpse into movie magic, Stunt and Special Effects Coordinator Steve Wolf shows students how the spectacular feats seen in movies are all based on simple science principles. This heightens kids’ interest in science, safety and movie making.
"Kids often don’t remember their science lessons in school, but can recite every line from their favorite movies,” Wolf says. “When I show kids the secrets of how movie stunts are done, learning science becomes as fun and memorable as any action movie.”
With every stunt Wolf emphasizes safety, including gun safety, seat belts, smoking, and fire safety. He also shows students that violence in the movies is really just science in a different form – an explosion is nothing more than the interplay of circuits, pressure and force. The presentation teaches all of the physical science tested in the states new TAKS test.
“Action entertainment is a proven way to get and hold kids’ attention. But instead of selling meaningless violence, we're using it to teach the basics of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mechanics, Heat, Electronics, Engineering and Computers,” Wolf says.
This particular show is near and dear to his heart because he is doing it to raise awareness of the Children’s Alopecia Project, a non-profit devoted to children living with the autoimmune hair loss disease, Alopecia Areata. You see, Steve has lived with this autoimmune disease that has no cure for 24 years. “To have Steve bring his show from Hollywood to Reading, PA will be a big thrill for the students but also a great awareness event for the Children’s Alopecia Project,” Jeffery Woytovich, Founder of the Children’s Alopecia Project says.
For 15 years Steve Wolf has designed, engineered, and performed stunts and special effects for feature films and television shows, including Cast Away (with Tom Hanks), The Firm (with Tom Cruise), The Client, The Jungle Book, America’s Most Wanted, All My Children, Crocodile Dundee II, and many more. He performs about 80 shows a year for kids.
